Canada's Nanaimo Bar Hiking Trail
We spent the afternoon out on a different kind of hiking adventure this weekend. We hit the Nanaimo Bar Trail in Nanaimo, BC!
The Vancouver Island city that is famous for the uniquely Canadian dessert treat has mapped out a trail that moves throughout the city visiting numerous restaurants, cafes and pubs that serve up creative twists on the traditional recipe. From cupcakes to cake pops and hot chocolate to martinis, this trail is sure to hit your sweet spot.
Make sure to bring along an icebox in your vehicle to store your unfinished dessert in. Our strategy was to visit a stop along the trail, buy the Nanaimo Bar treat, only have a small bite (unless it was really good - and most were!) and then take the rest in a to-go box. We kept the leftovers in the icebox for snacking later that night or the next day!
If you are looking for a break from all the sweets during your hike, look no further than the Nanaimo Museum which is home to a historic display of the Bar. With original recipes dating back to the 1950's, newspaper articles, photos and even custom stools, there is no better place to learn all that trivia you'll use to impress your friends!
Before you leave on your self-guided, calorie-filled adventure, make sure to stop by the Tourism Nanaimo website to download your guide and plan your trek. After all, you probably won't hit all 39 stops in one day, so you'll want to make your decisions carefully!
